The layout is an advanced trick but looks harder than it really is.
It’s more of a psychological barrier to overcome as it goes against the
riders’ nature to let the tip of the board drop to a position where a
hard crash can result.
The layout is all about the set-up at the bottom of the wake, once
you are in the air there is very little to do, a loaded boat and pole
will make this trick much easier to learn.
You need a nice wide cut out to the side of the boat and a smooth
turn in towards the wake. You need to have a nice cut in, increasing, as
you get closer to the trough before the wake. When you arrive at the
trough you need lean right back on the back corner of the board, the
side you are edging on. You should have your arms straight and as the
tension on the line builds when you get up the ramp of the wake you will
be launched upwards. You will feel a huge pull towards the boat and your
board will naturally drop back underneath you. When you let the board go
it will reach a point when it snaps back underneath you, ready to land.
This happens almost automatically due to the large amount of tension on
the line.
When the board returns to its normal position you can get ready for
the landing. Land on an edge, cutting away from the boat to reduce the
bounce. Once you get the hang of the trick it’s easy to add an air trick
on the landing due to the amount of height you get on the bounce.
