This is the natural progression from the side slide. You should
continue to use your palms down grip and keep a good body position. You
can keep both hands on the handle throughout this trick, it is not
necessary to let go with one hand and hold the handle behind your back.
Start off in a similar way, pull the handle in and turn your head in
the direction you want to turn. The key to making the extra quarter of a
turn past a side slide is to be more aggressive with the pull and head
movement. When turning to the left you should begin your pull then look
over your left shoulder as hard as you can and look for the bank or
horizon behind the boat. When you are facing backwards having turned to
the left, the handle should be vertical so your left hand is below your
right. This means you can get the handle tight into the side of your
body.
Once you have reached the back position you will automatically be
pulled back to face the boat. Continue to keep your arms in close to
your hips as you are pulled back round.
You have now completed 2 180-degree turns, one to the back and then
one to the front. You should now try going in the opposite direction,
this is exactly the same method apart from turning your head over your
right shoulder and having your left hand above your right when in the
backward position.
